Unions Partner to Bring VITA to Los Angeles
Eek, its tax season! Time to pull out the calculator and scratch your head in agony. Well, imagine you worked in 5 different states, held down 3 part-time gigs, and consulted on the side? People in performing arts can face a dauntingly complex tax return. Combine that with a hefty accountant’s fee, and you’re lucky to break even come April 15th.
Well, The Actors Fund is bringing a brand new Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) program to Los Angeles this year! LA VITA will provide four days of operation this first “pilot year”, with free income tax preparation to low and moderate income entertainment industry individuals and families. Special thanks to the support from our union partners: AEA, AFTRA, Screen Actors Guild (SAG), Screen Actors Guild Foundation and IATSE. Trained IRS Certified volunteers are helping qualified union members prepare their returns, with 64 appointments to offer this year (as well as walk-ins as time permits). That should make Uncle Sam happy!

On the Blog: Actors Fund Arts Center
Another reason Brooklyn is the new Manhattan! The newly opened Actors Fund Arts Center, a 2,000 square foot state-of-the-art performance space—located in The Schermerhorn in Downtown Brooklyn—provides residents and community arts organizations with affordable space for rehearsals, films and exhibitions. We caught up with a few of our Schermerhorn residents to see how they take advantage of the space. Read the story on the Actors Fund Arts Center.
Photo: Schermerhorn residents Lia McPherson and Nicole Kontolefa share how they utilize the new Arts Center.
