Valley Days: Building Community in LA

When people in the arts are unemployed, they need a supportive community to network, share ideas and get help. But many in LA can’t even afford the $4 or $5 a gallon gas prices to drive to our Hollywood office. Thanks to your support, we’ve found a solution. We’ve brought our community to them!

Our partnership with Local 80 IATSE, Motion Picture Studio Grips/Crafts Service in Burbank makes possible Valley Days—a monthly event that brings our services closer to those who live in the San Fernando Valley. Our clients get access to our professional counselors, guest speakers, and a safe place to gather and support each other as a community of performing arts and entertainment professionals. Read more.

To donate space for our Valley Days & help your community, call our Los Angeles office at 323.933.9244.

Thank the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic

“Please take a moment to sign a ‘thank you’ note to Dr. Spears and his dedicated staff. They do so much for our community!”
— Kathleen, a Broadway Usher helped by the Clinic.

Back in June, we introduced you to Kathleen Spock, a Broadway usher who was helped by the Clinic when Medical Director Dr. Jim Spears diagnosed her with asthma and provided the medication she desperately needed. Take a moment to thank Dr. Spears and his team for the free care they provide to more than 1,300 people, and nearly 3,000 free visits every year! Read more on our Blog, and Click to share your thanks.

Dale Olson, In Memoriam

As we mourn the August 9 passing of our devoted Trustee, Dale Olson, we share this special message from our Chairman, Brian Stokes Mitchell:

“This is great loss for The Actors Fund. Dale was a staunch advocate for this organization, and I’m personally humbled by his commitment and dedication. When the HIV/AIDS crisis devastated the entertainment community, Dale was among the first to speak out for those suffering and in need. His work led to programs and services that bring comfort and relief for thousands of our clients every year across the country. I speak for everyone at The Fund when I say he will be sorely missed.”

A veteran entertainment publicist, Dale represented some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Shirley MacLaine, Steven Spielberg, Joan Crawford, Rock Hudson and many others. In this 2011 Blog piece, Dale shared some memories of working with Rock Hudson in support of The Fund.

Join us as we remember Dale at a memorial service at the Hollywood Museum, 1660 North Highland Avenue, Los Angeles on Thursday, September 20 at 1 pm. Please RSVP with name, contact number and affiliation to Meg Thomas at 323.933.9244 or email mthomas@actorsfund.org.
