The Actors Fund helps...

Rosyln HartRosyln through The Al Hirschfeld
Free Health Clinic

Once a month at Joe's Pub in New York, Roslyn Hart adopts her now infamous alter ego, Michelle "SHELLS" Hoffman, a Carrie Bradshaw wanna-be who is an investment banker by day, and a cabaret singer by night. Although regularly performing a one-woman-show that's been positively reviewed by everyone from The New York Times to Time Out may seem glamorous, many actors, working or
not, cannot afford health care coverage.

A week prior to a recent performance, Roslyn caught a serious throat infection. Luckily, she knew about The Fund's Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic, where she was able to get help. The Clinic's Medical Director, Dr. Jim Spears "is a miracle worker," Roslyn says. "When you go to a doctor, you always feel that they're in a rush, but Dr. Spears took his time and really listened." She also appreciated Health Services Manager Janet Pearl's thoughtful counseling regarding coverage options, adding, "It's wonderful that their primary concern is helping us [people in performing arts and entertainment] do what we love without compromising our health."

Donate today to assure the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic will
continue to help people like Roslyn.

Kristin Chenoweth5 questions for...

Kristin Chenoweth

Tony- and Emmy-Award winning actress, currently starring as
Fran Kubelik in the Broadway revival of
Promises, Promises!

See Kristin and the cast at their Actors Fund Special Performance of Promises, Promises on September 19!

Q: You're performance of "His Love Makes Me Beautiful" brought down the house at The Actors Fund's Funny Girl Benefit Concert in 2002. Can you share a special memory from that night?

A: First of all, never in my life will I get to play Fanny Brice, so I wanted to have so much fun. And I did. The toe shoes hurt though. Bad idea.

Q: You're Special Performance of Wicked for The Actors Fund on March 28, 2004 was a night to remember! What is the most exciting thing about your final performance in the show?

A: My last night of ANY show makes me happy/ sad. Happy because I had the amazing experience but sad because I have to say goodbye to a part. The last night of Wicked was especially hard. Went through so much with that show and I was sad to leave. But happy I was a part of a show that changed people's lives. Truly it has. I know because people still tell me every day.

Q: The Actors Fund's programs and services, such as the HIV/AIDS Initiative and The Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative, help nearly 12,000 people a year in times of need, crisis or transition. Why, in your words, is it important to support The Actors Fund?

A: On every level, we, as actors must support The Actors Fund. Why? Because we are actors! My mom is a breast cancer survivor. What if I need help one day? People are still being infected with HIV. We must be there for these folks. We have to. I view it as part of my job as a HUMAN.

Q: You're career has been so varied on stage, television, film, recording and concerts. What do you find special about performing on Broadway?

A: I love being on stage the best. One never knows what can happen. Each night for example, I STILL learn things about Fran as I play her (in Promises). Every audience is different. To be a stage actor, you must also be a master "listener."

Q: What might someone be surprised to know about you?

A: If I wasn't an actor I'd be in forensic science.

Joe Benincasa

President & CEO of The Actors Fund

Served since 1988.

Joe oversees the overall work of The Actors Fund. Expanded
human services, expansion and renovation of residential services and recruitment of a dedicated Board and talented staff mark his
20 years of leadership. Charity Navigator, the largest and most utilized evaluator of charities, has continued to award The Fund its highest rating
of Four Stars, recognizing us as one of the most effective not-for-profit organizations in the country. Last year, 87 cents of every dollar contributed directly supported our programs and services.

"The creative community we're dedicated to serving plays an essential role in our society. The artists – on stage, back stage and front of house - walk a financial tight-rope and need a reliable, professional safety net which is The Actors Fund."

Fun fact: There's no sport Joe won't play, though he's partial to tennis and every racquet sport, and baseball (he still thinks like a short-stop).
