You Can't Stop The Beat
A Video Celebration for The Actors Fund
Over 150 actors, dancers and musicians including Harvey Fierstein, Sean Hayes, Kristin Chenoweth, Matthew Morrison, Martin Short and more came together to create an at-home video of “You Can’t Stop The Beat,” the joyful finale from Hairspray, as a celebration to raise money for The Actors Fund’s Covid-19 Emergency Relief efforts.
The group of artists includes Hairspray alumni from numerous productions, including the Original Broadway cast, First National Tour, West End, the Hairspray Live broadcast and both the 1988 and 2007 feature films. In addition to Hairspray alumni, professional theater, film and TV performers from around the world participated in the video celebration.
“During these difficult times, we wanted to inspire joy and hope in the community as well as raise money to support the future of theater and art,” said Hairspray composer and co-lyricist Marc Shaiman. “This shutdown affects all members of the arts, whether onstage, backstage, onscreen or behind the scenes. Imagine if all the shows you’re currently binge-watching suddenly evaporated!”
The “You Can’t Stop The Beat” Actors Fund video creative team includes David O (co-conceiver, co-director, musical director), Janet Roston (co-conceiver, co-director, choreographer), Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics), Scott Wittman (lyrics), Ally Rice (video editor), Michael Donovan (casting) and Scott M. Riesett (music mixer). The video is produced by Christopher Sepulveda.
Support provided by Apples and Oranges Arts, The Foundation for New American Musicals and Boneau/Bryan-Brown.
