Facing Homelessness in Chicago

This page lists organizations that may help in case of eviction, homelessness and the legal problems that arise with homelessness.

Catholic Charities Homelessness Services
This service offers several different programs, including:

  • A Bridge subsidy program
  • Shelter programs
  • Homeless prevention services

Salvation Army-Corps Emergency Lodge
The Salvation Army Evangeline Booth Lodge is for individuals and families who are suddenly homeless due to:

  • Eviction
  • Disasters, such as a fire or flood
  • Loss of utilities
  • Domestic violence
  • Being stranded while traveling, or other crises

A transitional living arrangement, the Lodge provides shelter for as many as 32 families or 120 individuals each night. The average stay is 30 days, but some stay longer, depending on the time needed to locate permanent living arrangements.

Heartland Alliance for Human Needs and Human Rights
Through diverse programs, Heartland serves people in the toughest of circumstances including survivors of violence, torture and war and those living in extreme hardship or poverty.  

Programs include:

  • Housing
  • Health care
  • Economic security
  • Legal protections

Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago
LAF provides legal assistance to low-income residents of Cook County in civil cases only. LAF does not do criminal, traffic, personal injury cases or wills/estates.
