Here are both paid and free legal resources that may be able to help you resolve housing-related problems.

Housing Conservation Coordinators
Legal non-for-profit organization that seeks to preserve safe, secure and affordable housing on the west side of Manhattan

MFY Legal Services

  • Provides free legal assistance
  • Provide advice, counsel and representation [ed: wasn’t sure if these services are also free, if so combine with first bullet]
  • Works to preserve affordable housing in Manhattan and protect tenants’ rights through Neighborhood Preservation Project
  • Helps organize and support tenant organizations
  • Advocates for policies and programs to provide greater protections for tenants and to promote affordable housing
  • Represents tenants in eviction proceedings and Housing Part actions
  • Provides telephone intake on issues such as eviction prevention, NYCHA repairs, housing-related benefits and rent overcharges (for tenants in Manhattan, Bronx and Brooklyn only)

Housing Court Answers
Housing Court Answers is the best place to go for information about housing court for people without lawyers. They provide a hotline for callers with information about:

  • Housing law
  • Rent arrears assistance
  • Homeless prevention guidance

They also conduct training on Housing Court procedures for:

  • Community groups
  • Unions
  • Elected officials and others
  • Eviction prevention programs
  • Housing law

Eviction Intervention Services
EIS collaborates with housing attorneys to assist New York City tenants on a one-to-one basis, offering no-fee advice on particular tenant problems during their Legal Clinics. They hold three housing legal clinics per week, one of which is especially geared towards seniors and held by our attorney for elders, though seniors may also attend the other clinics. Legal Counseling is available by appointment only.\

Goddard Riverside SRO Law Project
Provides free legal services and tenant organizing assistance to low-income residents of single resident occupancy (SRO) buildings on Manhattan’s West Side.

Legal Aid Society 
The Legal Aid Society provides free legal services to low-income New Yorkers in the five boroughs of New York City in the areas of

  • Housing
  • Immigration
  • Benefits
  • Family law
  • Employment law
  • Criminal defense
  • Child protection
  • Juvenile rights

Legal Services of New York City
With offices in all 5 boroughs, Legal Services NYC is the largest organization exclusively dedicated to providing civil legal services to low-income persons in the United States.

New York City Bar Association Legal Referral Service
If you can afford to pay a lawyer but do not know how to find one, you can try the Legal Referral Service of the New York City Bar Association, which will refer you to a lawyer in the New York Metropolitan area who will charge a $35 consultation fee for the first half-hour. If you decide to hire the lawyer after this consultation, you and the lawyer will work out the fee that you will pay.
