Recipients do not apply; rather, they are nominated by Academy Chancellors, fellows, and prize winners, who send a letter of nomination, including specifics about the nominee's current financial situation, to the Executive Director of the Academy, Academy of American Poets, 75 Maiden Lane, Suite 901, New York, NY 10038.
Provides emergency assistance to poets who have an established presence in the literary community as innovators in the field and have a substantive body of published work.
Offers interest-free loans to members facing unexpected medical expenses.
Helps professional writers and dramatists in financial need as a result of medical or health-related problems, temporary loss of income or other misfortune. The Fund gives open-ended, interest-free, no-strings-attached loans.
Provides grants of up to $2,000 to professional writers and editors who face serious financial difficulties because of HIV or AIDS-related illness.

Provides financial assistance to Blues musicians in need (and their families) due to a broad range of health concerns. The HART Fund provides for acute, chronic and preventive medical and dental care as well as funeral expenses. Grants generally range between $250 and $1,500.
Provides financial assistance in the event of an emergency or major catastrophe, terminal or severe illness, to individuals who have derived a substantial portion of their income from the field of Gospel music.
